Dorset girls in top 10 across UK in under-13 javelin

THREE Dorset girls are leading the way in their age group when it comes to javelin as they are all ranked in the top ten in the sport across the whole of the UK.

Dorset is not usually regarded as a hotbed of athletics but it is leading the way in the girls under 13 javelin with girls currently ranked first, second and seventh in the UK.

Wimborne Athletic Club and Poole Athletic Club boast three of the best in the country, with the club’s very own Mila Desborough leading the national rankings with 38.32 metres.

Teammate Bethany Cassidy is ranked second in the UK with a best throw of 34.22m and Lumen Myles of Poole Athletic Club is ranked seventh nationally with 30.95m .

Peter Impett of Wimborne Athletic Club said: “All three girls are exponent of the ‘fast arm’ which is necessary for great javelin throwing but each of them have other strings to their bow with Mila and Bethany ranked in the top twenty in long jump and 70 metre hurdles respectively and Lumen occupying third place ranking in the discus.

“The girls met up at the Ashdown track on Sunday (June 23) in a round or the Wessex Young Athletes League.  All three threw over 30 metres with Lumen coming within one centimetre of her personal best.”
