AIR FRYER users are being asked to heed a warning over following potentially dangerous online trends.
A video posted to TikTok suggested people could make their hard-to-clean air fryer sparkle once more by filling it with soap and water before switching it onto steam clean.
The hack had dangerous consequences for one person who decided to take the advice on board.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service scrambled to a property in Bournemouth yesterday (February 19) after the hack caused the air fryer to catch alight.

Luckily, the fire had already been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system by the time crews attended the scene.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is now warning people to only clean air fryers as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Safe and Well manager Sarah Moore said: “Air fryers are a great way to cook in an energy-efficient way but, like all appliances, care should be taken to use them safely.
“The manufacturer’s advice for cleaning and maintenance should always be followed to reduce the risk of a fire.”
Top safety tips for using air fryers:
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Always unplug the air fryer when it’s not in use. That way, it can’t be switched on accidentally.
- There are internal and external components of the air fryer that get really hot during cooking. Use oven gloves when handling the appliance, and protect the worktop by placing hot baskets and lids onto a trivet or heat safe board/mat.
- Don’t cook in a non-ventilated area or under over-counter cupboards. Pull the air fryer away from the wall and open windows if there is no extraction fan.
- Don’t let the air fryer’s hot air ventilation openings blow into electrical outlets. Space around the appliance is needed for the vent to circulate.
