A NEW project to test if WiFi can work in even the most rural and oldest railway networks is steaming ahead in Swanage.
Satellite-powered public WiFi will be installed in Purbeck Park car park, Norden train station and on board Swanage Railway’s popular steam service from early 2025.
The railway was selected as a testbed for a national project, the rural connectivity accelerator programme, which addresses the need for reliable connectivity in areas with challenging landscapes and limited service from traditional network operators.
Dorset Council was awarded £163,000 from the government to make the project a reality.
The council says this would be the UK’s first WiFi connected steam train.
Councillor Richard Biggs, Dorset Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for property and assets and economic growth said: “This is a ground-breaking project at Swanage Railway, which could help pave the way for better connectivity in the future.
“Not only will it enhance the visitor experience for people using the railway, but it will explore how these technologies can improve services in remote areas.
“It is a fantastic example of how we’re working towards a more connected and inclusive Dorset, ensuring that everyone benefits from digital innovation.”
The project addresses the need for reliable connectivity in areas with challenging landscapes and limited service from traditional network operators.
Using a combination of advanced connectivity solutions, including Low Earth Orbit satellites, Excelerate Technology UK will create a reliable WiFi connection for Swanage Railway.
Swanage Railway contributes more than £15 million to the Dorset economy every year.
Dorset Council says that having better connectivity will enhance the railway’s services by enabling cashless systems, helping to ensure its continued success as an important tourist attraction.
A Dorset Council spokesperson said: “By demonstrating the effectiveness of advanced technology in rural areas, this initiative sets a precedent for similar projects across the UK.”
Gavin Johns, chairman of the Swanage Railway Company, said: “The Swanage Railway is delighted to be partnering with Dorset Council and Excelerate to deliver enhanced rural WiFi connectivity on trains and at Norden station.
“As we look forward to 2025, with Rail 200 celebrating the bi-centenary of railways in the UK and the 140th anniversary of trains to Swanage, this is a great opportunity to show that old and new can work together for the benefit of rural communities and our customers and staff.”
Bethan Evans, chief operating officer at Excelerate Technology Ltd said: “We are thrilled to partner with Dorset Council on this project.
“Our advanced technology is designed to meet the unique challenges of rural environments.
“We believe that technology can transform how communities engage with heritage and tourism, and we are proud to be part of this initiative.”
Dorset Council says the success of this project could lead to enhanced digital infrastructure and economic growth throughout Dorset, ensuring even the most remote areas benefit from modern connectivity solutions.
