UTILITY companies are gearing up for a series of roadworks in Christchurch at the start of 2026 aimed at upgrading local infrastructure and improving services for residents.
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has stressed that it is not responsible for these works but acknowledges the disruption they can cause.
Around 70% of roadworks across the area are carried out by utility companies, rather than the council.
BCP Council’s portfolio holder for highways maintenance Cllr Andy Hadley said: “We know there is never an ideal time for roads to be closed but closures are necessary to allow for utility companies to improve the existing infrastructure and, in turn, upgrade services for local residents.”
“We completely understand how frustrating roadworks can be for residents and commuters and the team have been liaising closely with the utility companies responsible.
“We have also recently announced licensing plans that would significantly reduce road work disruption across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.”
The council has recently proposed a Lane Rental Scheme across the busiest routes in the area, which could cut disruption by up to a third.
The scheme works by incentivising companies to plan works more efficiently and carry out projects during off-peak periods.
A public consultation on the proposals is open until February 1, before the council can seek government approval.
“The Lane Rental Scheme proposals that we have put forward would cut that disruption by incentivising works to be planned to be undertaken more quickly and carried out during off-peak travel periods – meaning better roads and less congestion for everyone,” said Cllr Hadley.
Despite the closures, the council reminds residents that shops and services remain open.
Cllr Hadley urged the community to continue supporting local businesses:
“Please continue to support local businesses where you can and we appreciate your patience. For more information on these specific works please contact the appropriate utility company.”
