81-year-old Ita from Poole celebrates 50-year career in care

ITA Graven has no plans on retiring – despite recently marking half a century of looking after care home residents.

Ita first started her career in care in 1974, before going on to work in a number of care homes across Dorset.

She has spent the last 10 years at Elizabeth House – the staff of which recognised her remarkable achievement by throwing her a party and gifting her a ’50’ sign full of well wishes from residents and staff.

Ita, who is a care team leader at Elizabeth House, celebrated her 80th birthday last year, but says that she currently has no plans to retire as she thinks she might get “bored.”

“I love it. No two days are the same,” she said.

“I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Each resident is unique.

“They come to us so that we can look after them and I enjoy ensuring that they receive the best care for their personal needs.

“It’s good for the mind. Elizabeth House is a very nice home to work in.”

Elouise Powell, home manager at Elizabeth House, said: “We were so pleased to be able to celebrate and give our thanks for the dedicated care that Ita has provided over the past 50 years to Care South residents.

“She is a cheery face and a welcome, calming presence to the residents whether they’re having a good or bad day.

“She remembers all the little details about the residents and goes the extra mile to support them to live happy, fulfilling lives at the home.”

Pat, who lives at Elizabeth House, said: “Ita always listens to what you say. She’s a very nice lady and seems to understand your feelings.”

Kath, who also lives at Elizabeth House, said: “Ita is a really nice person.

“She’s very honest, and if she says something then you know that she will put your needs first.”
