MORE than 7,000 young people got techie during a special event across Dorset.
Dorset Coding Day 2024 saw record numbers of students from across Dorset and the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) area take part, getting a hands-on introduction to the skill.
Led by Dorset Council in partnership with Barclays Digital Eagles and supported by BCP Council, the initiative was hailed a resounding success, with “overwhelmingly positive feedback from schools countywide”, organisers said.
Rebecca Martin, head teacher at St Mark’s School Swanage, said: “Our students thoroughly enjoyed the coding activities provided by Barclays and Dorset Council.
“It was inspiring to see their excitement and engagement with the tasks.”

A total of 68 schools, 73 teachers and more than 7,000 students took part, supported by 42 volunteers.
Coding activities, designed by Barclays Digital Eagles, provided a hands-on introduction to the processes and techniques involved.
Cllr Richard Biggs, Dorset Council’s deputy leader, said: “I am pleased to see Dorset Coding Day go so well. It’s fantastic to encourage our young people into STEM careers by showing them what’s possible.
“This event is a great example of how we can inspire the next generation.”
Dorset Council thanked the volunteers who generously shared their time and expertise.
