“VISIT POO Harbour, Europe’s largest natural harbour and Wessex Water’s largest toilet.”
That’s the welcome visitors to a new website receive from campaigners highlighting the state of waters in the coastal town.
And as well creating the online campaign, over the weekend, activists targeted iconic signs around Poole – removing two letters to make the signs “more representative of the tides of sewage the town is frequently inundated by” – Poo Harbour.
The sneaky sign changes have been orchestrated by ad creatives Joe Foale-Groves and Gagandeep Jhuti.
Joe was born in Poole and grew up in the area, so the issue has been close to him for a long time.
More than 20 of the most iconic signs around the town have been changed, from the famous tile signs pictured to road signs and even supermarkets.
And Joe said the campaign was aimed at highlighting the issue to the new Labour Government.
“It would be the perfect way to show how much the new government cares about the environment and cleaning up the mess we’ve had to live in for years now,” he said.
At the website – www.pooharbour.com – people can send ‘postcards from Poo’ to MPs all across the country, requesting they keep bringing up the problem in parliament.
“Our ultimate goal is for targets to end sewage discharges into bathing waters and rivers to be brought forward much sooner than 2050,” Joe went on.
“The problem has gone on for far too long and changes need to be made for our health, wildlife and climate.
“Water companies can’t keep giving their bosses huge salaries without addressing all the infrastructure that needs updating.
“It’s obviously a big problem here that we all care about. No one wants to be paying more and more money to these water companies when so many days of the year, they’re polluting our sea.”
Wessex Water and BCP Council have been approached for comment.
