£2 million funding boost to support homeless in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

PEOPLE facing homelessness in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) will now receive increased support after the council received £2 million from the government.

The welcome boost will be used to help BCP Council prevent homelessness, support vulnerable families and offer a lifeline to those sleeping rough in the local area.

The £2 million came thanks to the rough sleeping prevention recovery grant, with £400,000 given to help strengthen partnerships with the volunteer sector.

A further £164,000 was also given to the council to specifically support children experiencing homelessness, particularly those living in temporary accommodation.

Councillor Kieron Wilson, portfolio holder for housing and regulatory services at BCP Council, said: “We welcome this funding boost and are pleased to see the government recognising the challenges faced by local authorities across the country.

“We have done so well, and continue to work hard to get families out of B&B accommodation, but we still have too many children in homes that are not permanent.

“The new grant funding will improve their quality of life and will prevent more children from experiencing homelessness.

“In addition to this people sleeping rough will get the help they need. We’ll be able to offer tailored support, safer housing, and work closely with landlords, as well as our wider partners to prevent homelessness.

“This will make a difference to many in our community and brings us one step forward in making sure everyone has a safe place to call home.”
