FANCY living – or working – in a hut on wheels?
A Dorset company, inspired by a landmark barn in the county, has launched a novel answer to the housing crisis – the Sixpenny Hut House.
Also known as the Hut House, Dorset hutmakers Plankbridge have designed a two-storey dwelling on wheels for those struggling to find a home, or to extend their current property.
The design was inspired by an iconic Dutch barn near Sixpenny Handley, and the company says it offers “an elegant solution for those who need extra space but are unable to upsize due to a squeeze on housing supply, or extend due to planning restrictions and high construction costs”.
Richard Lee, co-founder and director of Plankbridge, said: “We have had double the number of customer enquiries for living space for adult children who are unable to get on to the housing ladder, as well as customers looking to accommodate carers.
“Higher build costs seem to have had the effect that many people are holding off on extensions and self-builds and are exploring alternative residential solutions.
“We believe our take on the Tiny House can help solve residential housing needs and, of course, there is also the added attraction that people can take their house with them when they move.”
Measuring 215 sq ft and clad in hard-wearing corrugated iron, with windows handcrafted from sustainable sweet chestnut, the £95,000 Sixpenny Hut House comes equipped with space-saving solutions and modern-day comforts, including a fully-fitted kitchen with open shelving and Belfast sink, integrated fridge, electric hob and plumbing for a washing machine, as well as an ensuite shower room with wash basin and WC.
A double loft bedroom, accessed by oak stairs, comes complete with cupboard storage and is fitted with a wide window to enjoy uninterrupted views from the comfort of your bed.
Below, there is space for flexible seating and table in front of the double doors that lead to a decked area, with heating and air-conditioning options available to make the Hut House suitable for minimalist living all year round, the makers said.
